Ever solved a Rubik’s Cube?

A Rubik’s Cube has several faces, six to be precise; white, yellow, red, blue, orange, and green, and each face has its set placement. You can’t change the placement of the six sides, but you need to ensure each adjacent piece is lined up, matching the colours together. Now the difficulty with a Rubik’s Cube is when the adjacent pieces are all jumbled up. The trick in solving the Rubik’s Cube is knowing what movements are required to bring all the coloured pieces back into the correct placements again.

Business is much like this, each side can be seen as a separate department such as Management, Sales, Marketing, Finance, Operations, HR, and so forth. For most, you’ll know how these should look, where they should fit into the business and their correct placements. But the trick is knowing how they all work together. The trick is knowing what strategies work, when to deploy them, and how to use each one.

Now, there are shortcomings in the Rubik’s Cube analogy, as business is a lot more complex with human elements and more moving parts, it’s more dynamic. Where ‘as a Rubik’s Cube is static.

So, putting a business together when you’ve not done so before can be just like a Rubik’s Cube. You may know each major aspect of the business and have a mental image of how the result should look, but do you actively know the strategies to put it all together?
